In 1695, only three years after the French bombarded this area and destroyed everything except for the Town Hall, these remarkable Baroque houses were completed. The architecture imparts a clear visual of the level of social and cultural life from the 17th century, and vivid gilded statues of saints and heroes top the houses while Shops, restaurants, and taverns predominantly occupy the ground floors. The Grand-Place is the heart of Brussels social and civic life where music and coloured light flood the entire square on summer nights and a variety of markets and events take place throughout the year.
